20 Questions Every Couple Asks a Wedding Photographer

Choosing a wedding photographer is one of the few wedding decisions you can’t undo. The décor, the menu and the music all end with the celebration, but the photographs are what you and your families will keep going back to for decades.

If you’re planning a wedding in Pune, you’ll probably speak to several photographers before you decide. These conversations go much better when you know what to ask. Below are the 20 questions couples ask us most often, with honest answers: some general advice that applies to any photographer, and some specific to how we work at Amour Affairs.

Use them as a checklist on your calls. A good photographer will be happy to answer every one of them clearly.

1. What photography style do you specialise in?

This is usually the first question, and it’s the right one to start with. Wedding photographers describe their work in many ways: candid, documentary, traditional, editorial, fine art. The labels matter less than what you actually see in their work. Look at how they photograph people. Do the images feel natural or staged? Are the emotions real? Does the colour and editing feel like something you’d still enjoy in twenty years?

2. Do you offer candid and traditional wedding photography?

Most Pune weddings need both, so it’s worth asking how a photographer balances them. Traditional photography covers the moments your families will expect: the rituals, the stage photographs with relatives, the formal couple portraits. Candid photography captures what happens in between, like a mother adjusting the bride’s dupatta, friends dancing at the sangeet, or the groom’s reaction when he first sees his bride.

We cover both. Planned family and ceremonial photographs make sure nothing important is missed, while candid coverage throughout the day documents the emotions and interactions that happen naturally. Many couples tell us the candid frames end up being their favourites, but it’s the combination that makes a wedding collection complete.

3. Can we see a complete wedding gallery?

Always ask this. Instagram posts and portfolio pages show a photographer’s best twenty frames from each wedding. A complete gallery shows you how they handle an entire day: the getting-ready photographs in a small hotel room, the family portraits in harsh afternoon light, the crowded pheras, the dimly lit reception.

When you look through a full gallery, check for consistency. Are the family photographs as carefully done as the couple portraits? Are the candid moments spread across the whole day, or only in the easy parts? Would you be happy if this were your wedding? 4. How many photographers will be covering our wedding?

There is no single right number. It depends on your guest count, the number of functions, whether the bride and groom are getting ready in different places, and whether you want cinematography as well. A small daytime ceremony may need a compact team. A large wedding with a few hundred guests and simultaneous events usually needs more people so that both sides of the family are covered properly.

Rather than giving a fixed number, we plan the team around your wedding. The number of photographers and cinematographers is written into your quotation, so you know exactly who will be there before you book. It’s also worth asking any photographer whether the person you speak to will personally be shooting your wedding, or whether a separate team will be sent.

5. How many hours of coverage are included?

Coverage is normally planned function by function. The haldi might need a couple of hours in the morning, the wedding ceremony most of the day, and the reception an evening slot. Before you ask for a quote, write down a rough timeline for each event so the photographer can plan coverage that matches your day rather than a generic package.

With us, the time slot for every function is agreed in advance. Indian weddings rarely run exactly to schedule, and we understand that, so our team never packs up before or on the dot of the contracted time. If you need us to stay longer than planned, extra hours are charged at the rates specified in your contract. That way there are no surprises on the day.

6. Do you provide wedding cinematography as well?

Many couples in Pune now book photography and film together, and there are real advantages to having one team handle both. The photographers and cinematographers are used to working alongside each other, they share one plan for the day, and they don’t compete for the same spot during important rituals.

Yes, we offer wedding cinematography. Instead of a long, traditional video, our wedding films are made to be watched again and again: a 10 to 15 minute “forever film”, a 3 to 4 minute trailer and a 50 to 60 second teaser that’s easy to share with family and friends.

7. How much does wedding photography cost in Pune?

Wedding photography prices in Pune vary widely, and the headline number on its own doesn’t tell you much. The cost depends on the number of functions, the hours of coverage, the size of the team, whether cinematography is included, and what you receive afterwards, such as albums and films. Two quotes that look similar can include very different things, so compare what’s actually being delivered, not just the total.

For reference, our own packages typically range from INR 40,000 to INR 4,00,000 per day, as listed on our FAQs page, and GST is applicable as per our terms. Because every wedding is different, the most accurate answer is a customised quote. Share your dates, venue, functions and guest count, and we’ll recommend coverage that suits your plans.

8. What is included in your photography package?

Always ask for the inclusions in writing. A clear package should tell you how many photographers and cinematographers will attend, how many hours or functions are covered, what you’ll receive (edited photographs, films, albums) and roughly when. Check whether travel is included if any of your functions are outside the city, and ask what happens if an event runs late.

9. Are albums included in the package?

Some packages include an album and some don’t, so it’s worth checking early. A printed album is still the way most families look back on a wedding. It’s the thing grandparents actually pick up and leaf through, long after the digital files have been saved to a drive and forgotten.

We design premium wedding albums that can be added to your package. The images are selected together by you and us, and we share a digital draft with you before anything is printed, so you can make changes until you’re happy with every spread. Whether an album is part of your quote depends on the package you choose, and we’ll make that clear from the start.

10. Do you offer pre-wedding photography?

A pre-wedding shoot does more than give you beautiful photographs for save-the-dates and invitations. It’s also the best way to get comfortable in front of the camera and with your photographer before the wedding day, which shows in your wedding photographs.

11. How far in advance should we book our photographer?

Earlier is almost always better, especially if your date falls in Pune’s busy wedding season or on a popular muhurat date. The photographers you like most are often booked by other couples for the same dates, and once a date is gone, it’s gone.

For us, booking about a year in advance is most common. We take on no more than 30 weddings a year, so dates do fill up. That said, it’s always worth asking even if your wedding is much sooner. Get in touch with your dates and we’ll tell you honestly whether we’re available.

12. What happens after we confirm our booking?

Knowing the process after booking tells you a lot about how organised a photographer is. Ask how they plan the day with you, when you’ll next speak, and who your point of contact will be.

Once you decide to go ahead with us, we sign a contract and a 50% booking advance secures your date. The balance is due before the last day of your wedding. We always meet before the wedding, whether over coffee, a video call or a phone call, to understand your plans. About a month before the celebrations, we put together a shot planner with the key details for each ceremony: timings, contact details and a group portrait list. That way our team arrives fully prepared.

13. Do you provide a contract?

You should never book a wedding photographer without a written agreement. A contract protects both of you. It records what you’re paying for, the payment schedule, what happens if a date is postponed or cancelled, when you can expect your photographs, and how the images can be used.

14. Can we request specific photographs or family combinations?

Absolutely, and you should. Every family has photographs that matter more than any others: a grandmother who travelled a long way, a group of cousins who grew up together, a family friend who’s like a parent. The best way to make sure these aren’t missed is to write them down in advance.

We build your requests into the group portrait list in your shot planner and work through it on the day. It helps to nominate a relative or friend who knows everyone to gather people quickly. We make every effort to capture the moments you’ve asked for, though some things depend on the day itself, such as a guest arriving late or a ritual running over time. Planning together in advance is what makes the difference.

15. How do you handle large weddings and multiple functions?

Pune weddings often stretch over two or three days, with a haldi, mehendi, sangeet, wedding and reception, sometimes at different venues and with a few hundred guests. Ask how the photographer plans for this: how the team is split, how they move between venues, and how they make sure both families are covered equally.

For larger celebrations we plan the team size function by function and agree it in your quotation. The shot planner gives everyone the timings, venue details and contact numbers they need, so the team knows where to be and who to look for. Candid photography works particularly well at big weddings, because there’s so much happening at once, from the dance floor to the quieter conversations at the side of the room.

16. How do you approach candid photographs?

Almost every photographer offers “candid photography”, so ask them to explain how they actually work. Do they direct people into natural-looking poses, or do they wait for real moments? How do they stay unobtrusive during emotional rituals? How do they make camera-shy relatives feel comfortable?

For us, candid photography is about observation and timing. The goal is to notice what’s about to happen, be in the right place, and let it unfold without interrupting it. That’s how you get photographs of real laughter and real tears rather than expressions put on for the camera. This approach comes from our founder. 17. How long does it take to receive the final photographs?

Editing a full wedding properly takes time, especially when there are several functions and thousands of frames to go through. Ask for a clear delivery timeline in writing, and ask whether you’ll get a preview sooner. Be wary of promises that sound too fast for the amount of work involved.

Our terms set out delivery of the final photographs within 60 to 90 working days after full payment is received. We know waiting is hard, so we also share a sneak peek of a few photographs and your couple shots sooner, by email, drive or WhatsApp. That way you have something to share with family while the full collection is being edited.

18. Will we receive both edited and original photographs?

Photographers handle this differently, so ask two things: how many photographs you’ll receive, and whether they’re all edited. Some photographers deliver only a small selection of their favourite images. Others hand over everything, edited or not.

We share all the photographs from your wedding, not a selected handful. As a guide, a six to eight hour shoot typically delivers 600 to 800 photographs. Every image you receive is edited, because nothing leaves our studio unfinished, and that’s why we don’t hand over unedited RAW files. You’re free to print your photographs, make more albums and share them with family and online for personal use.

19. What happens if the photographer is unavailable on our wedding date?

It’s an uncomfortable question, but an important one. Illness and emergencies can happen to anyone, and a professional photographer should have a plan for them. Ask what the backup arrangement is and whether it’s written into the contract.

Our contract covers this. If our photographer can’t attend because of unforeseen circumstances such as sudden illness or injury, we arrange another photographer to cover your wedding on our behalf. We also don’t photograph any other event on the same day as your wedding, so our team’s attention stays on you. On the technical side, we bring backup equipment so that a single faulty camera doesn’t cost you a moment.
